Changing False Beliefs

Changing false beliefs is a steady theme of this website because it’s so important. Our beliefs can either help or hinder us. If we have a belief that isn’t true, it’s just as powerful as one that is.

Just saying something is true doesn’t mean it’s true, obviously. However, believing it’s so makes it appear to be true to the believer. That’s what gets us in trouble.

“The path of least resistance and least trouble is a mental rut already made. It requires troublesome work to undertake the alternation of old beliefs.” John Dewey

Belief is powerful!

Beliefs are just thoughts we have about something that we give extraordinary importance to. Beliefs have no substance in themselves, but we often feed our beliefs the same story over and over again until it makes them appear to be true.

What about our brains?

The brain is divided into several sections, each with distinctive characteristics and functions. But for our purpose, we’re concerned with consciousness which really has no specific location. So we say we have a conscious thinking part and a subconscious thinking part.

The conscious brain

Neuroscience tells us that we use only 5% of our brain for activities of conscious decision-making, emotions, and actions. So what’s doing most of our thinking?

The subconscious brain

95% of our thinking is subconscious and running on automatic. It’s a good thing we have the subconscious working for us so we don’t have to think about breathing, or blinking, or relearning to ride a bike. But it can cause us problems too.

But that’s not all the subconscious does.

This gets back to how we live out daily lives. We think we’re conscious, making clear decisions based on the evidence of our senses. But we’re greatly influenced by the programs (the beliefs) that were implanted in our subconscious, particularly in the first 7 years of life.

Why else would groups of people think the same way, develop the same cultural habits,  hold the same prejudices, respond with the same emotions? Their thinking and behaviors are automatic.

Where do those ideas come from?

So why does it appear to someone that holds a certain belief that the belief is true? Is it scientific evidence that convinces a person that girls don’t belong in school, animals are incapable of having feelings, or that a rich man can’t be a good man? Where do those ideas come from? Since they’re not scientific, they come from other people and what we correctly or incorrectly perceive.

Conflicting beliefs

If thinking a belief is true means the belief is true, then every conflicting belief would be true. Of course, that’s ridiculous, but the beliefs a person holds are true in the mind of the believer and others he passes his beliefs on to. Those beliefs, true or false, are the starting point for actions and outcomes.

Beliefs get stuck.

Beliefs are passed from one generation to the next. After all, grownups appear all-knowing and wise when we’re little children. Besides, it may not be safe to disagree, and children want to be accepted. Once the belief is installed, evidence can be manufactured to support it. Evidence to the contrary is unnoticed or discounted as untrue.

We each have a map.

We each have a map we use to navigate through life and we follow that map because it’s familiar. It has brought us to where we are now and we’re still alive, so our map must be accurate, we think. Attitudes and beliefs are markers on that map.

When is it time to make a new map?

How do we know when we need to make new maps? When our maps lead to hate, bigotry, disrespect, greed, ignorance, injustice, unkindness, dishonesty, or fear, it’s time to get out the drawing board and draw a new map.

When we think we’re unworthy, or we blame others for us not having what we want, then it’s time to draw a new map. Following the old map just leads us in circles. Sometimes it takes an event, or education, or an epiphany, or another person who is held in high esteem, or energy healing, to help us change beliefs..

Changing false beliefs is possible.

When we’re ready to make a change, when we see that our lives are not as we desire, and when our common sense, intelligence, or our humanity tells us it’s time, we can do it. We are creative beings. We have the ability to create the environment, relationships, circumstances, and conditions of our lives. We do it with the power of our thought, one of the greatest gifts given to us.

What comes first?

Awareness comes first. To change anything, you need to be aware that something needs changing. Make a list of your beliefs…about you, about other people, about money, about relationships, about love, about anything important to you. Does your belief serve you and enhance your life? Does it have integrity? Is it in alignment with your core values? Is it really true or is it something someone told you and you believed?

What would happen?

What would happen if you changed your beliefs? Some of your beliefs may be worth hanging onto, but how about some of the others? It may take some work to change those false beiliefs, but it’s worth it.

Changing false beliefs affect others.

Since we are all connected, the quality of our thought can make a difference to the people around us, as well as to the quality of our own lives and, ultimately, to the entire planet. It does not serve you or others for you to believe you are unworthy, too old, too poor, or too anything to create the life you want.

Some beliefs about you that are just plain untrue:

  • You’re not enough.
  • You’re too old to try something new.
  • You don’t have the ability to make money.
  • You can’t save a dime.
  • You’re not smart enough to…..
  • You’re not lovable.

If your thoughts about you and others are barriers to your full expression of life, then it’s time for changing false beliefs. “Here’s a wise saying to ponder: “Don’t believe what you think.”
